OTTAWA—Khurram Syed Sher smiled outside the courthouse Tuesday after being reminded he had been acquitted a few moments earlier on terrorism charges by a Superior Court Justice who described him as “naive.”

Lawyer Michael Edelson said Justice Charles Hackland, was “dead right” about the description.

“After four years, when you spend a great deal of time with a client, you do get some insights, you get to know them pretty well and . . . the judge got it exactly right in that sense,” said Edelson, standing alongside Sher, moments after the verdict made his client the first Canadian to be tried and acquitted of terrorism charges.

Sher, a 32-year-old pathologist from Montreal, was arrested with two other men in August 2010 by the RCMP, who had them under surveillance over suspicions the men were conspiring to commit terrorist attacks in Canada and abroad.
