Militants losing battle in Syria: Analyst

Foreign backed militants fighting against the government of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria are losing the battle in the Arab country, a political analyst tells Press TV.

“Clearly the President of Syria has gained the upper hand here. If we think back over the last three years, the decline in the amount of violence that has taken place, and not that the violence taking place presently is acceptable, but [there has been] a serious decline in the amount of daily attacks on the part of these terrorists,” author and journalist Mark Glenn said in a Monday interview.

As the militants grow weaker in Syria, the US and other agencies responsible for funding and training the rebels “are pulling back. They realize now that the game is up,” the analyst noted.

“The entire world knows that America has funded this terrorist group and all of the atrocities that have come from this. And so, what we see taking place now is that this is the death rows of this conspiracy against the nation of Syria….”

Glenn pointed that the support of Militant extremists fighting in Syria by the US and its allies could possibly backfire, “the United States that pushed them into doing this now is basically leaving them out there twisting in the wind.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. Reports indicate that the Western powers and their regional allies — especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey — are supporting the militants operating inside the country.

According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced in the violence.

Analysts from an arm of the British defense consultant IHS Jane’s and from a nonprofit think tank in London estimate that over 15,000 foreign militants, including Americans and Europeans, are fighting in Syria.

On December 5, France and Belgium warned that European nationals, who fight alongside foreign-backed militants against the Syrian government, could pose a potential threat to the European Union and its allies.
