David Cameron is refusing to rule out “tit for tat” action against Spain amid rising tensions over Gibraltar, Downing Street has said.
The Prime Minister has already threatened to take legal action over border checks which have left people queuing for up to eight hours to get into Gibraltar. However, Mr Cameron’s spokesman on Monday repeatedly refused to rule out taking further action, including putting constraints on Spanish tourists coming to Britain. Any legal action taken through European courts could take years to come into effect, and the Prime Minister’s spokesman said he wants to “resolve this quickly through political means”.
Asked whether “political action” could include “impeding Spanish tourism”, the Prime Minister’s spokesman said: “Our preference here is to resolve this via poltical means and through dialogue with the Spanish government.
“We clearly want to reach a resolution which is acceptable and brings an end to these totally disproportionate checks.”
