Snowden: a pawn in big-power politics

Source: Asia Times:

While the attention of the world community is almost entirely on the travel itinerary of the ex-CIA whistleblower Edward Snowden, there is a far more important side to the affair — what he has been doing with his spare time in China and Russia, who he’s been meeting with. The US intelligence community is one hundred percent certain that Snowden has been “debriefed” by specialists in China. The ABC News has a detailed piece, evidently based on US intelligence sources, as to what all Snowden could have divulged (here).

Indeed, the damage done to America’s top secret spy agency NSA is staggering. On the political and diplomatic plane, the critical mass of trust and mutual confidence accruing in the US-China relationship will take time to restore. The White House spokesman Jay Carney made it abundantly clear in his press briefing Monday, here, that they don’t believe Beijing’s stance to be the case — that it had nothing to do with the way Snowden left Hong Kong.
