‘Bangladesh, friend of all’

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said Bangladesh was pursuing a foreign policy with the principle of being ‘friend of all, and enmity with none’.

She told the visiting delegation of the US House of Representatives that 5,409 elections had taken place under her government without any complaints being raised.

A spokesman of the Prime Minister’s office, Bijon Lal Deb told journalists later that Hasina had told the US lawmakers that her government wanted to institutionalise democracy in Bangladesh but faced several hurdles.

While mentioning of the polls under her government, the Prime Minister said all of them were free, fair and neutral.

Hasina stressed on receiving cooperation from USA and other developed countries for development of agriculture, nutrition, health, education and employment in Bangladesh.

She said that foreign investment in the country had increased because of measures adopted by her government.

Bijon Lal Deb said the Prime Minister also discussed cooperation in infrastructure and overall development.

The delegation expressed hopes that bilateral relations with Bangladesh will be further strengthened in the future.

They praised Bangladesh for growth, governance and its role in UN Peace Keeping missions.

US Ambassador to Dhaka Dan W Mozena was present at the meeting.
