Editor’s comments

As a Muslim, I believe that abortion after 24-28 weeks of pregnancy should be illegal as baby is viable and should be regarded as fully human.  Abortion should be allowed in case of rape or incest or if there is a significant danger to mother’s life.  With these provisions abortion should be discouraged.

Family values of Islam, with prohibition of extra-marital or pre-marital sex should make abortion an extremely rare event.  The focus should be on family values rather than on legitimacy of abortion.

This a very distressing thing to say; if I said that Muslims should only be killed rarely and for a good reason, what would you think ? Every person begins his life from conception; all the major characterstics that make us a unique human individual are set then and at no other point can life begin; you can’t start yourself at 24 weeks,; 24 weeks from when, ? from conception of course.
It’s time to rethink these primitive attitudes; family life is important to all Muslims, and so is the sacred preservation of life itself. Anything which is done to harm an unborn baby at one week after conception will affect his body for the rest of his life .So please, rethink this idea; human life does not begin at 24 weeks. The time of becoming a viable baby is a matter of science; in years ago to be born at 30 weeks meant to die because no one could save him; now we can save such babies. That is a matter of science, not theology . Unborn Babies didn’t become human beings when the artificial incubator was invented in 1891 because only then could they survive .

To return to the editor’s words, to say that abortion should be a rare event is meaningless. It isn’t a a rare event; there are 189000 unborn babies killed by legal abortion in the UK every year. The attitudes that permit this massacre are the ones I see here in this country, and the editor’s words are complicit in that.. Not one life should be sacrificed ; to save a life is as if to save the world . Isn’t what the Quran says ? [005:032] “if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people.” Well then every life , not matter how young ,is sacred .You cannot choose to save some and not others .
