Lailat Al Miraj is one the most important observations in the Islamic calendar

As the holy month of Ramadan draws closer, Muslim communities worldwide will take part in another major celebration beforehand. Lailat Al Miraj is one of the most important days in the Islamic calendar, marking the point at which the Prophet Muhammed received instruction that Muslims should pray five times a day.
According to passages in the Quran, the Prophet Muhammad who was at the Kaaba in Mecca, was first visited by two archangels who provided him with a mythical winged steed called Buraq. The Buraq carried the Prophet to the ‘farthest mosque’ in Jerusalem (Al-Aqsa Mosque), where he ascended to heaven, was purified, and returned with the instruction from God, that Muslims should pray five times a day (salat).
Salat is one of the five pillars of Islam and is a practice that Muslims hold in high regard. On the Islamic calendar, Lailat al Miraj (also known as Isra and Mi’raj, Al Isra’wal Miraj or Laylat al Miraj) is generally observed on the 27th day of the month of Rajab (seventh month in the Islamic calendar).
This year, it is expected to fall on the evening of Wednesday, February 7. Eid ul Fitr and Eid ul Adha are the only compulsory annual celebrations that Muslims must take part in, and all other events on the Islamic calendar are not mandatory.
