Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas cancels meeting with Biden after hospital strike

From Abeer Salman

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has canceled his meeting with US President Joe Biden after a strike on the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza City, according to Palestinian officials — a decision that comes on the eve of the US president’s high-stakes visit to the region.

Abbas is traveling back to Ramallah and has called for an urgent meeting of the Palestinian leadership tonight following the strike on the hospital.

Palestinian officials have said between 200 to 300 people were killed in an Israeli strike, citing preliminary estimates.

  1. Hamas wants a propaganda victory – Regev
More from Mark Regev, senior adviser to the Israeli prime minister, who’s been speaking to BBC News about the blast at the hospital in Gaza.

“I urge you to be cautious. There are very serious indications that it’s not us.”

“Hamas wants to have a propaganda victory, saying Israel has killed innocent civilians.”

“There’s no evidence to support that claim,” Regev said.

The BBC is working to verify what happened at the hospital on Tuesday evening.

  2. An attack on the al-Ahli Hospital in central Gaza City has killed at least 500 people, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. Palestinian officials say an Israeli airstrike hit the hospital courtyard where displaced Gazans were taking shelter; the Israel Defense Forces blamed the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group, saying “a barrage of rockets” was passing near the hospital when it was hit. Meanwhile, bombardments by the Israel Defense Forces on Tuesday hit southern parts of the Gaza Strip — an area the IDF has demanded that Gazans from the north relocate to in anticipation of its expected offensive in the north against Hamas. As many as 1 million people may have been displaced from the north of the enclave, aid agencies say. Several Western leaders announced plans to travel to Israel this week in a show of support ahead of the country’s expected ground offensive in the Gaza Strip and to plead for humanitarian relief for Gaza. President Biden said he would visit Israel on Wednesday to show solidarity with the U.S. ally.
