SUBANG NEWS – Prof. Dr. H. Azyumardi Azra , M. Phil., MA, CBE. is a well-known Muslim scholar in Indonesia, whose ideas and works are respected not only domestically, but also in various international forums.
He died today, Sunday, September 18, 2022 at the age of 67 years. Not only members of the press mourn his passing, Azyumardi will be remembered by the people of Indonesia as an influential scholar, academic, scholar, book writer and historian.
Perhaps it was his line, Azyumardi, who had been a journalist in the legendary magazine Panji Masyarakat (1979-1985), ended his career as the number one person in an independent institution formed to protect press freedom and improve the quality of press life based on Law No. 40 of 1999.
Azyumardi has served as Chairman of the Press Council since 19 May 2022, replacing Mohammad Nuh.
The Chancellor of UIN Syarih Hidayatullah for the period 1998-2006, who was born in Lubung Alung, Padang Pariaman, West Sumatra on March 4, 1955, is widely known as a respected and moderate-minded Muslim scholar.
In 2020, when there was friction that threatened the freedom of religion for Shia and Ahmadiyah citizens in Indonesia, he spoke out loud. In particular, he asked the Minister of Religion Yaqut Cholil Quomas for the government to confirm the affairs of minorities.
“Especially for those who have been excluded and then there is persecution, that needs affirmation,” said Azyumardi at the time.
Azyumardi is very critical of religious tolerance, not only in Indonesia, but also in the world. He often gives an example that followers of minority religions often find it difficult to establish places of worship in various parts of the world.
