In recent days, the world has been horrified by images of what has cumulated from the ongoing, seemingly age old conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians. Failure to reach a peace agreement and public declarations of a Jewish homeland in Palestine made over the years have only exacerbated the situation. Over 70 years ago, the United Nations made plans for the partition of Palestine, and it was at the same time, between 1947 and 1949 that the Palestine war broke out, leading to a wider conflict between the Arabs and the Israelis. During this dire time, the Second Caliph of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmad (ra) penned a treatise, outlining the harsh reality of the situation and urging the Muslims to put their differences aside and unite for a peaceful resolution. His words resonate to this day in understanding the issues at hand; hence, The Review of Religions Translation Team is honoured to present the English translation of this treatise which was published in the Al-Fazal newspaper on 21stMay, 1948.

That day which the Holy Qur’an and the Hadith [sayings of the Holy Prophet (sa)] warned about centuries before, that day about which the Old and the New Testament warned about, that day which was described to be particularly painful and dreadful for the Muslims, it seems has finally arrived. The Jews are again being settled in Palestine. The United States and the Soviet Union who are preparing to wipe each other out seem to be strange bedfellows on this issue. And the strange thing is that they were also united over the issue of Kashmir. They were both in favour of the Indian Union and now they are both in favour of the Jews over the Palestine issue. Why is there unity over these issues? Why do these two enemies become united against the Muslims? There can be many reasons for this however one reason may be more apt which is also in our favour. That is they may both visualise their plans being ruined with the progress of Islam. This is akin to the reaction of dogs that gather together when they smell the presence of a lion. Maybe this is the way they gather together. Maybe both of them with their foresight sense the signs of the progress of Islam, maybe the lion of Islam which appears sleeping to our eyes, is moving towards wakefulness, maybe a light shiver in its mane, invisible to its friends is very apparent to the enemy. If this is the case then the current dangerous situation is pointing towards the future progress [of the Muslims], however, side by side the huge responsibility on the shoulders of the Muslims are also being presented to them.

It is a rather astonishing fact that the issue of Palestine and Kashmir has started at the same time. Moreover, it is astonishing that the people living in Kashmir and Palestine all hail from the same nation [i.e. the Bani Israel]. And what is even more astonishing is that one part of this nation became Muslim and is today dwelling in the land of Kashmir and drawing the sympathy of fellow Muslims towards itself, whilst the other is engaged in a deadly battle against the Muslims in Palestine. One half of the nation is offering sacrifices for the sake of Islam, whilst the other half is offering sacrifices to eradicate Islam. In the conflict of Kashmir, we often hear the word, Kasher, in other words referring to someone from Kashmir. Similarly, in the conflict of Palestine, we often hear the city name, ‘Kashir’, and the original name of Kashmir was in fact based on the name of this city but this name gradually became distorted and is now referred to as Kashmir. Or, another meaning of Kashir is ‘similar to Syria.’

Recently, an event was held to commemorate the establishment of Kashmir in which an effort was made to make it appear as if the sentiments of the people of Kashmir lie with India. In this event, a representative of the Soviet Union actively participated and thus proved to the world that India has their support when it comes to the issue of Kashmir. Why is it so? Only time will tell…[1]

The issue of Kashmir is extremely important for Pakistan, however the issue of Palestine is extremely important for the Muslims altogether. Any injustice committed against Kashmir will indirectly impact [the Muslims], whereas any act of injustice committed against Palestine will have a direct impact. Palestine is very close to the land which is the final resting place of our Master [the Holy Prophet (sa)]. Even during his lifetime, despite his kind treatment towards them, the Jews would brazenly and shamelessly oppose him in every possible way. Many of the wars were due to the instigation of the Jews. It was the Jews who incited Chosroes to kill the Holy Prophet (sa) but ultimately they were made to face humiliation by God Almighty, but nonetheless they revealed their wicked nature. Similarly, it was the Jews who were leading [the enemy] during the Battle of the Ditch and never before had all the Arabs united because the people of Makkah did not possess the organisational ability for this. In fact, this was all the doing of the Jews who were expelled from Medinah and who eventually gathered together all the Arabs and brought them to Madinah. However, God Almighty humiliated them as well. Nevertheless, the Jews did not leave any stone unturned in their efforts. The actual enemies of the Holy Prophet (sa) were the people of Makkah, but even then they never attempted to kill the Holy Prophet (sa) in a deceitful manner. The Holy Prophet (sa) travelled to Taif and in accordance to the customs of the land, he gave up his rights that were afforded to him as a citizen of Makkah, however when he had to return to Makkah, a staunch enemy of his who lived in Makkah came to his help and to grant him his rights once again as a citizen of Makkah. He accompanied the Holy Prophet (sa) along with five of his sons and entered Makkah and told his sons, ‘Muhammad [sa] may well be our opponent, but today it is a matter of the honour of the Arab people. Thus, if he wishes to re-enter Makkah through our help then we ought to extend him our help otherwise our honour will be tarnished.’ He further said to his sons, ‘If the enemy seeks to attack him, then you all ought to give your own lives before anyone can even reach him.’ [2]

This was the honour shown by an Arab enemy. On the contrary, the wretched Jews, whom the Qur’an has declared to harbour most enmity to the Muslims, invited the Holy Prophet (sa) to their forts and under the guise of a peace treaty, threw a millstone from the rooftop in an attempt to kill him.. God Almighty informed the Holy Prophet (sa) about this scheme and the Holy Prophet (sa) managed to escape unscathed. [3] A Jewish woman invited the Holy Prophet (sa) for a meal and offered him food laced in poison. Once again, God Almighty saved him, [4] but the Jews exposed their true intentions. This same enemy now wishes to establish itself in the form of a mighty government near to Madinah, perhaps with the intention that after they become established they can advance upon Madinah. Any Muslim who thinks that this intention of theirs is unimaginable, it is their own imagination that is deceiving them. The Arabs are aware of this reality; they know that the Jews dwelling in the Arab lands are now thinking how to remove the Arabs from their homeland. For this reason, the Arabs have put their differences aside and are ready to stand united against the Jews. But do the Arabs have the power to do this?

Does this issue only affect the Arabs? It is patently clear that the Arabs do not possess the power to deal with this issue and neither does it solely affect the Arabs. This is not the issue of Palestine it is the issue of Madinah, this is not the issue of Jerusalem it is the issue of Makkah itself. This is not the issue of any ordinary individual, rather it is the issue of the dignity of Prophet Muhammad (sa). The enemies despite their disagreements have gathered together in their opposition against Islam. Will the Muslims, despite a myriad of reasons for unity, not come together on this occasion? The wealth of America and the schemes and trickery of the Soviets are both gathered against the poor Arabs. How can Arab tribes oppose those powers that could not be checked by the might of Germany? The time has come for us to decide whether we should die one by one, or work together diligently for victory. I think the time has come when Muslims must decide to either be defeated during this effort or completely wipe out the mischief-mongers opposed to Islam. The air force of Egypt, Syria and Iraq is no more than a hundred planes however the Jews can build up a fleet ten times larger than this with great ease. And maybe the Soviets will offer them its airbase as a gift.

Time and again I have reminded the Muslims that the Soviet Union are their bitter enemies, but they have failed to pay any heed to this. Many Muslim countries keep turning to the Soviet Union with open arms and placing all their hope in them. Whereas the truth of the matter is that the biggest enemy of the Muslims is the Soviet Union. USA is supporting the Jews for their vote, whereas the Soviet Union is supporting the Jews so they can establish a base in Arab lands. The strategy is the same but the motives are different. Indeed, the underlying motive of the Soviets is far more dangerous than the motives behind the actions of the USA. However, since both of their actions are the same, the Islamic world must challenge both USA and the Soviets, but do so with wisdom and planning, through unity and solidarity. I believe that the number of Muslims in the world today has reached a number whereby if they wished to lay down their lives, no one will be able to destroy them. But Allah knows best to what extent my aspirations will bear fruit. The conflict in Kashmir has been ongoing for eight months now, but until now, the Muslims have not dealt with this thorn of contention with reason or sagacity. Although the danger surrounding the Palestine issue is more pertinent, it is however a long-term issue. To what extent will it succeed in reinvigorating them [i.e. Muslims]?

Today, our objectives cannot be achieved through resolutions but only through sacrifice. If the Muslims in Pakistan really want to do something then they ought to hand over at least 1% of their property to their government. With just this 1% Pakistan can generate at least 1 billion rupees for this cause. And with this 1% much can be done to alleviate many of the present difficulties of Islam. Once Pakistan takes this step the other Muslim countries will also follow her example and fifty to sixty billion rupees will definitely be collected with which, despite European opposition, tools and implements can be bought for Palestine. We will be able to buy goods if we are willing to pay more than the market price, for example if we pay five rupees for something which is only worth two, three or four rupees. The integrity of the Europeans has a price even though it may be dear. These commodities can definitely be bought though it may be at inflated prices. Hence, I am alerting the Muslims to be aware of these tense times and remember that the words ‘The disbelievers have become one nation’ is being fulfilled word for word. The Jews, the Christians and the atheists have stood up to finish the power and might of Islam. In the past, the European countries attacked the Muslims one by one but now the World Powers have attacked as a unified group. Let us all join together to oppose them because we have no contention over this issue.

To bring up other issues in which there is a disagreement between [Muslims] at this stage is an extremely foolish and ignorant act. The Holy Qur’an even addresses the Jews saying:

[‘Say, “O People of the Book! come to a word equal between us and you—that we worship none but Allah, and that we associate no partner with Him, and that [a] some of us take not others for Lords beside Allah.”’] [5]

Despite all the differences, the Holy Qur’an still calls the Jews towards reconciliation. So at a time when the roots of Islam are being hacked down and the Holy sites of the Muslims are in danger, is it not time for Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Malaya [Malaysia], Indonesia, Berbers and Turkey to unite with the Arabs to ward off this attack, which the enemy has launched to break the strength of the Muslims and disgrace Islam?

There is no doubt that from the Qur’an and Ahadith [sayings of the Holy Prophet (sa)] we learn that the Jews were to once again settle in Palestine. But nowhere is it stated that they would remain there forever. It has been decreed that ultimately Palestine is to be ruled by the ‘righteous servants of Allah.’ [6] Thus, if we adopt righteousness, then potentially the first aspect of this prophecy may be fulfilled in that the Jews have announced an independent state [in Palestine]. But if we fail to adopt righteousness then the timeframe of this prophecy will be extended over a longer period and this will be a detrimental setback for Muslims. Hence, we must reduce the period of this prophecy as much as we can through our actions, our sacrifices, our unity and our fervent prayers and lamentation and thereby drawing closer the era whereby the sovereignty of the Holy Prophet (sa) will be established in Palestine once again. I think that if we can do this we will turn the ever-growing tide of opposition to Islam, in favour of Islam. Christianity will move towards decline and deterioration and Muslims will once more step towards greatness and glory. This sacrifice may also cleanse the hearts of the Muslims and their hearts may incline towards belief. Then may they become indifferent to the love of the world, may they incline towards the respect and veneration of God and His Messenger (sa) and His faith. And their lack of faith may change into faithfulness, their disbelief into belief, their lethargy into alertness and their misdeeds may be dislodged one after another.

Humbly
