Why Are So Many Far-Right Extremists Converting to Islam?

Far-right, neo-Nazi, and white nationalist groups are not having a good time these days. Not only are Muslims immigrating into their countries by the boat load — which, in their eyes, ensures that native European culture devolves via immigrant cultural influence and the white race continues to be diluted by inter-marriage, etc. — but their own members are also converting left and right.

Politico:

A former member of Geert Wilders’ far-right Dutch party announced Monday that he has converted to Islam.

Joram Van Klaveren said he made the switch from critic to convert while writing a book about Islam. “During that writing I came across more and more things that made my view on Islam falter,” he told Dutch radio.

Van Klaveren was a member of parliament for the Freedom Party (PVV) from 2010 to 2014, but quit the party after Wilders’ asked supporters during a rally in 2014 if they wanted more or fewer Moroccans in the Netherlands, to which the crowd chanted “Fewer! Fewer! Fewer!

I found this funny. Did he not realize that his party was anti-immigrant? Was he under the impression that Wilders’ and his Nazi-sympathizing followers were keen on the whole immigrant “swarm” “flooding” Europe?

Van Klaveren was a harsh critic of Islam during his time as PVV politician, saying “Islam is a lie” and “The Quran is poison,” newspaper NRC reported.

Asked in the newspaper interview if he feels guilty about these statements, Van Klaveren said he had been “simply wrong,” adding that it was “PVV policy: everything that was wrong had to be linked to Islam in one way or another.”

This is powerful. His conversion wasn’t based on some kind of leftist, feel-good, kumbaya, we-are-all-one-happy-multi-cultural-interfaith family. It was based on a simple recognition of truth vs. falsehood. Islam is the truth. Other than Islam is falsehood. Simple.

Without a doubt there are many others on the far-right in Europe who recognize that Islam is the truth but for political reasons and sheer careerism, they won’t say so publicly. Very sad, in the pathetic sense.

Arnoud van Doorn, a former PVV official, was an earlier convert to Islam. Van Doorn congratulated Van Klaveren on his decision via Twitter, writing: “[I] never thought that the PVV would become a breeding ground for converts.”

Allahu akbar! Love that comment. The truth of Islam is so clear that even in places where it is most hated and reviled, the light will shine through.

[Allah] brings the living out of the dead and brings the dead out of the living and brings to life the earth after its lifelessness. And thus will you be brought out. [Quran 30:19]

The far-right is definitely sympathetic to Islamic values, as I have written before. So much of the right wing consists of people who are sick and tired of the leftist cultural project that pushes feminism, homosexuality, and cross-dressing on society and labels whoever does not embrace that filth with smiles and rainbow pins as a fascist. People are tired of thisgarbage.

In terms of online white supremacist culture, you even have the most hardcore neo-Nazi’s calling for “White Sharia.” This might seem counter intuitive, but it makes perfect sense. The Sharia is the antidote to so many of modernity’s social ills: debased sexual promiscuity, the collapse of marriage, the annihilation of the family institution, the erosion of gender roles, the disappearance of male authority, etc. These white supremacists correctly identify the Sharia as the cure for this cancer.

A prominent example is Andrew Anglin, editor of what has been described as the most hateful site on the internet, the Daily Stormer. Anglin includes Muslims in his hateful diatribes but also has advocated for “White Sharia.”

But these white nativists don’t want to admit the truth because that will undermine their entire political and philosophical project. So rather than accept Islam, they have to come up with an ironic meme, hence “White Sharia.”

The meme, however, betrays a simple facts. Whiteness in and of itself is not enough to counter the cultural decay. An ethnic identity is not enough to preserve values over the generations. A religion is needed for that, and whiteness is not a religion and is not a transcendent source of right and wrong that people could be motivated to submit to. The simple fact of the matter is, whites are no less resistant to imbibing degeneracy, and arguably, their nations have been at the forefront of propagating that degeneracy to every corner of the globe, via colonialism and continued imperial domination.

It is time for white supremacists to face these simple facts instead of hiding behind memes.

As Muslims, we have to be the leaders in denouncing degeneracy and calling to truth. It is our duty to call everyone to Islam, including the white supremacists. We call all of humanity to good.

Of course, there are those cultural Muslims who say we should boycott white supremacists, not give them the time of day, etc. But this is stupid and contrary to Islam. No one was more hateful, bigoted, and closed-minded than the jahil Arab tribes who were fighting the Prophet ﷺ and the Sahaba. They were racist to the extreme and buried their own daughters. But that didn’t stop the Muslims from speaking to them, calling them, and praying for their guidance. And as soon as those Arabs accepted the truth, they went from being sworn enemies to being loyal brothers. Faith is far thicker than blood. What could be more beautiful than that, all of humanity coming together upon truth and goodness?

We hope that more of the far-right will open their eyes to the truth. May Allah guide them.

  1. You could argue that Islam in it’s hardline fundamentalist manifestation plays an ideological role akin to far right ideology. The far right and Salafi fundamentalism are both intolerant ideologies. So this is not so surprising.
