RIYADH — Saudi Arabia’s powerful crown prince vowed to “pursue terrorists until they are wiped from the face of the earth” as officials from 40 Muslim countries gathered on Sunday in the first meeting of an Islamic counterterrorism alliance.

“In past years, terrorism has been functioning in all of our countries… with no coordination” among national authorities, Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, who is also the Saudi defence minister, said in his keynote speech at the gathering in Riyadh.

“This ends today, with this alliance.”

The summit is the first meeting of defence ministers and other senior officials from the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition, which officially counts 41 countries and identifies as a “pan-Islamic unified front” against violent extremism.

The alliance was announced in 2015 under the auspices of Prince Mohammed.

The alliance groups largely, although not exclusively, Sunni-majority or Sunni-ruled countries.

It excludes Saudi Arabia’s arch-rival, Shiite-dominated Iran, as well as Syria and Iraq, whose leaders have close ties to Tehran.

Sunday’s meeting coincides with an escalation in tensions between Riyadh and Tehran, particularly over wars in Syria and Yemen and the political structure of multi-confessional Lebanon.

Saudi Arabia accuses Iran of supporting armed groups across the Middle East, including Lebanon’s Shiite Hizbollah and Yemen’s Huthi rebels.

The meeting also comes as several military coalitions, with backers including both Iran and key Saudi ally the United States, battle to push the Daesh terror group from its last remaining bastions in Iraq and Syria.

The alliance meeting in Riyadh brings together Muslim or Muslim-majority nations including Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Afghanistan, Uganda, Somalia, Mauritania, Lebanon, Libya, Yemen and Turkey.

Retired Pakistani general Raheel Sharif has been appointed commander-in-chief.

‘Distorted image

of Islam’

The alliance aims to “mobilise and coordinate the use of resources, facilitate the exchange of information and help member countries build their own counterterrorism capacity,” Sharif said.

While the alliance officially includes Qatar, which is the target of a six-month boycott led by Saudi Arabia, organisers in Riyadh said no Qatari officials were present at the meeting.

Qatar’s flag was also absent.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain abruptly cut diplomatic and trade ties with Qatar in June, accusing the emirate of being too close to Iran and supporting extremism.

Qatar denies the allegations.

Egypt, which sent a military official and not its defence minister to the Sunday meeting, is reeling from a Friday attack on a mosque that killed more than 300 people during prayer time.

While Daesh has not claimed responsibility, Egyptian authorities say the organisation is the main suspect as the mosque is associated with followers of the mystical Sufi branch of Sunni Islam, whom Daesh has branded heretics.

Prince Mohammed said Friday’s “painful event” was a reminder of the “danger of terrorism and extremism”.

“Beyond the killing of innocent people and the spread of hatred, terrorism and extremism distort the image of our religion,” he said.

Since his sudden appointment as crown prince, Prince Mohammed has moved to consolidate power, announcing crackdowns on both terrorism and corruption.

A corruption purge saw around 200 Saudi elites including princes, ministers and business tycoons arrested or sacked earlier this month.

  1. HOPEFULLY THIS IS A GOOD NEWS.
    The question is how?
By combating the terrorist or by reforming the violent verses and hadith or both.
I strongly believe that without reforming or abolishing all violent verses and hadith, the extremist Muslim and terrorist cannot be wiped the extremist and terrorist on earth.

Second, I strongly believe that if Saudi Arabia and Iran still hate and blame each other, instead of love and respect each other, there is no peace in Islamic countries.

Third: Saudi Arabia has to accept Shiah, Sufi, ahmadiyya and others as Muslimbrother, and then other Islamic countries will follow .

    DANGEROUS! SYARIAH LAWS IN PUBLICT.

If we as Muslim still claim that Islam in a religion of peace, love and mercy , Not discriminative religion.
I advice you do not follow the idea of clerics that Muslim should follow Islamic laws completely according ot his interpretation of Islam such as:
    1. To build Islamic Bank
    2. To build islamic School
    3. To build Islamic Haspitol
    4. To build Islamic insurance
    5. To produce Islamic food or Halal Food
    6. To have a Buses for male and female
    7. To obligate women to wear hijab in public
    8. To segregate male and female at public place
    9. To ban selling alcohol and pork
    10. To ban all non Islamic film / movie etc
    11. When Muslim become majority in a city or province
then Clerics want to have Syariah as state law.
What will happen if Christian, Jews and Buddhis do the same as extremist Muslim do? Discrimination is not Islamic teaching and against Human Right.
Can you imagine it, what does society look like? It will devide people with religion belief. It will be dangerous to do that.

My suggestion to avoid conflic is that practice your religion between you and God in private life. Religion’s law can not be implemented in public place. The public laws should be find the common value. Can not be impose one religion law to others.
Hopefully You agree with my view. We have to seperate religion matter and state or public law.

    All ❤️

  2. Notice something? All members of the coalition are on the payroll of Saudi Arabia (including its Commander in Chief)…

  3. Somi: You are a bit extreme too. Let’s say I disagree with half of your points above. What is the harm if I want to have halal food? And why you want to push my wives to take off their hijab? It is their free choice. Yes, free choice ! Please permit it as well!

    • @ Rafiq, If you disagree it means you agree with the extremist ideology of Islam. Right?
The main goal of the extremist clerics to put Halal Label on foods or drink is to boycott non Islam employee and non Islam products .

This law was sent to Prophet at conflic and war time. It is logic. But this law is not relevant when there is no religious war anymore.

Rafiq, please read this article below:
Look at the extremist Islamic employer who discriminate against Non Muslim people, ( non Muslim are forbidden enter this area! ) how bad it is?
The extremist employer assume that an Christian is a pig, unclean , najis. Is it Islamic teaching Rafiq? No. Misleading Muslim.

MALAYSIA AND BRUNEI ARE A BIG PRODUCER OF HALAL FOODS IN ASIA.
The process varies from certifier to certifier, and can sometimes also include ensuring that the producers are not involved with alcohol or pork. ( Non Muslim is forbidden). The suspicion is that you may contaminate the produce. In Brunei, even the cook preparing the meal must be Muslim. ( Allah condemn the act of discrimination in the name of Islam.)
It is very ridiculous of Islamic law. Extremist Clerics are so bigoted. They follow the ancient Islamic clerics from Saudi Arabia blindly.

Their hate / harsh attitude toward Christian, Jews etc.
These extremist / bigoted clerics forbid Muslims eat at non Islamic restaurant, forbid non Muslim work at Islamic Bank, or ban non Islamic Bank, forbid non Muslim work at foods manufacturing process, driver, etc. Forbid Muslim to celebrate Christmas day. Forbid Christian to build a Church etc.
May Allah guide and protect Rafiq from the extremist Islamic idelogy Amin

      READ MORE DETAIL: HALAL LABEL
      http://ilovemodrenislam.blogspot.com/2016/09/halal-foods.html?m=1

      • I think you are more or less alone in your anti-halal tirade. I never read from any other Muslim such a ‘dislike’ of the halal label. (Yes, I do have some doubts about ‘halal chicken’ for instance, as everything is so industrialized these days, including chicken farms .. just as an example)

  4. @ Rafiq— This is a warning from Allah!

And if you obey most of those on the earth, they will mislead you far away from Allâh’s Path. They follow nothing but conjectures, and they do nothing but lie.Q. 6:116

The truth always came from a person, dont you know that? If you feel it is a truth take it, do not look at who is he/ she. The truth always came from God, the bad thing always come from evil.

  5. Additional

The bad thing not about the chicken, but about the discriminating against non Muslim which is what I concern very much. It is very dangerous for Muslim when Chistian will do the same. Can you see my point!
    With ❤️

    • The ‘halal butchery’ where I buy my ‘halal meat’ from in Zurich, Switzerland, has a Spanish (christian) butcher working there. not slaughtering, I suppose, but cutting the meat for sale …

  6. Rafiq—Cutting or slaughtering does not make different, we live in modren technolgy era today right?
As long as health expert of government say that this slaughtering meat is unlawful, we cant eat it, if he says this slaughtering meat is fine, that meat is lawful or halal.

Unlawful or lawful is determined by government, NOT by Islamic clerics anymore, Clerics is lack of knowledge about foods and drinks. That is my advice!

    With love❤️
