MERIDEN — City police officers were issued new badges in a ceremony celebrating the department’s 149th anniversary Thursday afternoon.

The Baitul Aman Mosque in South Meriden donated about $11,000 to sponsor the badges, which are replicas of badges from 1907. Officers also received commemorative coins and cases.

“Thank you very much for your support,” Meriden Police Chief Jeffry Cossette said. “We really appreciate it, the officers really appreciate it.”

The ceremony was a precursor to the department’s year-long celebration of 150 years in the city, which includes a community event at the Meriden Green, a policeman’s ball and a parade.

“I know you’re going to wear these badges with pride,” Mayor Kevin Scarpati said.
