Golden Globes gives nod to banned Indian film ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’

While the Indian censor board refuses to certify Lipstick Under My Burkha, the west is already pushing the Alankrita Shrivastava directorial towards a potential Golden Globe nomination.

According to Times of India, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), famous for starting and co-producing the annual Golden Globe Awards, has chosen Lipstick Under My Burkha as the official film for the HFPA screening.

At the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA), where the film was officially selected to screen on the opening night, director of IFFLA, Christina Marouda announced the news.

“We are honored that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has chosen our opening night film, Lipstick Under My Burkha, to be an official Golden Globes qualifying screening. The director of the film will now have the opportunity to properly plan a Golden Globes campaign should she choose to submit the film for nomination.”

She added, “Our goal in working closely with Hollywood Foreign Press Association is to ensure that the Golden Globes are on the radar of filmmakers in India and that they become more and more aware of this platform and can begin to formulate their strategy.”

The director told Mirror, “This was really unexpected to me. This is a big leap for me and my team.”

Lipstick Under My Burkha has run into a roadblock with the Indian censor board who refuse to certify the film claiming: “The story is lady-oriented, their fantasy above life. There are contentious sexual scenes, abusive words, audio pornography and a bit sensitive touch about one particular section of society.”
