A crackdown on unlicensed abattoirs in India’s most populous state has spread to other states ruled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party, as Hindu hardliners press a political agenda that risks alienating the country’s Muslim minority.

The move started after Modi appointed Yogi Adityanath as chief minister of Uttar Pradesh state following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) landslide victory in elections there this month.

The demands by right-wing Hindu groups to stop the slaughter of cows, considered holy in Hinduism, could stoke communal tensions with Muslims, who dominate the meat industry and make up 14 percent of India’s 1.3 billion people. Most of the beef produced in India comes from buffalo rather than cattle.

India’s history is pockmarked by horrific Hindu-Muslim communal clashes. In Modi’s home state of Gujarat, 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed after a wave of riots in 2002 when he was chief minister. A Supreme Court investigation found no case against Modi, who denied any wrongdoing.

  1. Time for Muslims to learn from the Hindus and get away from killing animals to feed themselves, that means chickens and well as cows and others. There is no need for meat in the diet, and there are many good and tasty alternatives. Veganism is becoming ever more popular and is healthier, not to mention the suffering involved in the rearing and killing of innocent animals.

    • I felt like serioudly laughing at your ignorance. Oh common mate, if tomorrow i come and threaten you to wear bikini and no other cloth, would you ‘learn from me and get away from killing’? This is outright thuggery, have some morality to see right and wrong. Sorry to say, you seem mentally challenged with crippled sense of justice. I don’t care if your feelings are hurt, my life my rules. Who will stop me form eating what i want. Anyways you don’t matter, just eat your lamb shank and drink your pint of beer while lecturing everyone else on internet. good day!!

  2. It seems in India, cows/animals are more precious than fellow humans…

Then, they talk about ‘Islamic’ extremism. This is Hindu extremism. How about that?!

Why should any country force a particular diet on its citizens? Is that freedom and democracy?

  3. The following is a petition I have just signed about abusive treatment of animals in slaughterhouses in the UK, so much worse in other countries, like India, Pakistan, etc. Certainly there is no love and compassion there. I am forwarding to you for consideration:

“I am writing following the exposé of animal abuse at the Malik Food Group slaughterhouse in Lancashire to urge you to make independently-monitored CCTV cameras mandatory for all English slaughterhouses.

Animal Aid placed fly-on-the-wall cameras at this non-stun slaughterhouse – the 12th it has filmed – and found shocking cruelty. One of the company’s directors already has a criminal conviction for animal cruelty.

The investigation found that the knife used was so blunt that a slaughterman hacked at the throats of sheep multiple times, which can only have been agonising. Animals were moved before they’d had time to lose consciousness, and some were deliberately picked up by their fleeces and thrown.

Worryingly, a worker warned the others when the Food Standards Agency (FSA) vet was approaching.

This slaughterhouse had CCTV cameras fitted, and it is clear that Food Business Operators (FBOs) are either not properly monitoring their cameras or they are failing to report the cruelty on their premises. According to the FSA, one-fifth of FBOs refuse to give the regulator access to their footage.

It’s time we made independently-monitored CCTV cameras mandatory.

I urge you to take immediate steps to end the widespread abuse of animals inside slaughterhouses by ensuring that cameras are fitted throughout each one, and that an independent body that has welfare as its priority is charged with monitoring the footage. This abuse must not be permitted to continue.”
