Ramadan fast seen as way to educate about Islam

To educate and dispel some of the myths about Islam, the Ahmadiyya Muslim community launched a Canada-wide campaign on Wednesday called Fast with a Muslim Friend.

Participants register online and are paired with mosques or families across Canada to learn how to fast.

A spokesperson for Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Canada said 80 people signed up on the first day of the campaign last Thursday. A blog for participants to share their experiences will be created.

Hanan Sobhi, imam at the Ahmadiyya Mosque in Hamilton, said the campaign is a way of getting people together.

“Muslims are terrorists” or “Muslims have a disposition toward violence” are two of the misconceptions he says he’s heard.

“The more you know about something, the less xenophobia or fear of the unknown there will be.”

Mosque members haven’t yet been paired with anyone for Fast with a Muslim Friend but Sobhi expects to have participants this week.
