According to the 2011 census made by Statistics Mauritius, Hinduism is the major religion at 48.5%, followed by Christianity (32.7%), Islam (17.3%) and Buddhism (0.4%). Those of other religions accounted for 0.2% of the population, which non-religious individuals were 0.7%. Finally, 0.1% refused to fill in any data.[1]
Ameenah Gurib-Fakim (born October 17, 1959)[3] is a Mauritian Biodiversity Scientist. She is the Managing Director of CIDP Research & Innovation. In 2015, she was brought to the public’s attention after her nomination as the succeeding President of Mauritius,[4] she is expected to be inaugurated as the sixth President on the 5th of June 2015.[5] She will be the first woman to ever hold the title of President of Mauritius.[5]

- 2007: Laureate for the National Economic and Social Council – Gov. of Mauritius
- 2008: Elevated to the Order of the ‘Commander of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean’ by the Government of Mauritius
- 2008: Awarded the ‘Emma Award’ by Bank One Ltd. ‘For Outstanding achievement and accomplishment’
- 2009: Laureate for the CTA/NEPAD/AGRA/RUFORUM for ‘African Women in Science’
- 2009: Elevated to the Order of the ‘Chevalier de l’Ordre des Palmes Academiques’ Government of France
- 2009: African Union Award for ‘Women in Science’ for the Easter African Region
