After there unsuccessful attempts in lower courts, a British-Pakistani national, Dr Masood Ahmad, has been granted bail by the Lahore High Court in Pakistan.
The 72 years old, Dr Ahmad has been jailed for over two month on blasphemy charges after he was ceased by the Anarkali Police for having read a verse from the Holy Quran during a religious discussion.
A mob of Islamist extremists was present at each bail hearing to harass and intimidate the judges and the accused’s legal team.
“The previous three times, the judge was cowed by the Islamist mobs gathered outside the courthouse,” wrote Sadaf Ahmad who campaigned for Dr Ahmad’s bail via a petition on Change.Org.
According to Amjad Mahood Khan, national director of public affairs for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in the United States, his Pakistani counterpart, Saleem ud Din, has confirmed the bail grant by the court.
“While the blasphemy case against him remains pending, he’ll be released from prison,” Mr Khan said in a statement.
Dr Ahmad’s arrest, anti-Ahmadi laws and blasphemy law of Pakistan were discussed in a written testimony submitted by Mr Amjad Khan at a U.S. Congressional hearing held on January 16, 2014, by the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission.
