The Ghana Muslim Mission (GMM), an Islamic organisation set out to propagate Islamic teachings and principles, over the weekend held its 55th national conference to discuss ways to contribute positively to national development.
The conference also aims to raise funds for the construction of a senior high school in Accra to help train students, especially Muslims to become worthy citizens in the religion as well as in the country.
Sheikh Dr. Amin Bonsu, Acting National Chairman of GMM, said the GMM being a development oriented organisation over years had been involved in the promotion of both spiritual and material development of its members in the various regions.
He said the mission had been able to establish 113 educational institutions; ranging from kindergarten to senior high schools.
It had also built mosques, clinics and dug boreholes in some Muslim communities throughout the country as part of its corporate social responsibility.
He noted that a poverty alleviation project and the construction of a University in Kumasi to augment the only Islamic University were underway.
Dr Bonsu said plots of land had been acquired for the establishment of Islamic senior high schools at Sefwi-Bekwai, Sunyani, Mankessim, Koforidua and Tamale to enhance the education of members.
“Another plot of land has been acquired for the establishment of College of Education at Beposo in the Ashanti Region and other for a nurses training at Kukuom in the Brong-Ahafo Region,” he added.
He said the mission had come to the realisation that the bane of the Ghanaian Muslim community was ignorance and lack of holistic education to propel its development.
He thus called on the government to support the GMM Senior High School project.
Sheikh Dr. Amin Bonsu expressed appreciation to all institutions; NGO’s and the planning committee whose immerse contribution had made the conference a successful one.
The conference was on the theme: “Mobilising the Potentials of Muslims for National Development.”

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission in Ghana can take some credit from these achievements, as other Muslims in Ghana (and other parts of Africa) have in fact ‘copied’ the efforts of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at. Even starting with the name they just chose ‘Ghana Muslim Mission’ copying from ‘Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission’. All that is good. We should always copy the good of each other.
