It wasn’t until after sunset Wednesday that Haroon Mohammad knew when the local Muslim community would celebrate Eid al-Fitr, or the Festival of Breaking the Fast.

Perched on the top floor of a parking garage in West Lafayette, Mohammad searched the skies for the moon. Although clouds prohibited a clear sighting, news of the crescent moon in other parts of the world confirmed that the celebration should be held Thursday morning.

The crescent moon indicated the birth of a new month and the end of Ramadan, the month when Muslims around the world and in Greater Lafayette fast, pray and give to charity. Local Muslims celebrated the Eid al-Fitr with prayer, community meals, gift giving and kind greetings.
