China and US begin human rights talks in Beijing

US and Chinese officials are meeting in Beijing on Wednesday for talks on human rights.

The US is expected to urge China to ease a severe government crackdown on dissent, which activists say has been the most extensive in years.

  1. Unfortunately people always talk of ‘your human rights abuses’ and not ‘ours’. I wonder whether the Chinese bring up the US list of abuses, such as Guantanamo, torture in the various ‘offshore’ prisons etc.

  2. You are right. Even though we hope ‘right to be might,’ unfortunately, in human affairs sometimes ‘might is right.’

    One would think that as China becomes stronger economic power, it will begin to have more say on international issues.

    Obama has been a major disappointment on Guantanamo torture issue despite all his promises during the election campaign.
