MAKASSAR – The Shia, Ahmadiyya, and Fajar Nusantara Movement (Gafatar) are still in the spotlight in the Islamic community due to the prevalence of deviant sects.

These three streams were questioned by the Chairman of the United Islamic Community Forum (FUIB) of South Sulawesi, Ustadz Muchtar Daeng Lau, in a discussion held by the Makassar Children’s Communication Forum. This discussion was themed “Government and Community Synergy in Anticipating the Rise of Deviant Sects in South Sulawesi” at the Ardan Masogi Cafe, Jalan Perintis Kemerdekaan, Makassar City, Monday (30/1/2023).

Head of the Fatwa Division of the South Sulawesi Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), DR. KH. Muhammad Ruslan Wahab, conveyed 10 criteria which are indicators of a group with a deviant sect. The 10 indicators are:

1. Denying one of the six pillars of faith and one of the five pillars of Islam. Both believe or follow aqidah that is not in accordance with the Qur’an and sunnah. The third believe in revelation after the Qur’an. Fourth, deny the truth of the contents of the Qur’an. Fifth, carry out interpretations of the Qur’an that are not in accordance with the rules. Sixth, denying the position of hadith as a source of Islamic teachings. Seventh insult or demean the prophets and apostles. Eighth deny the Prophet Muhammad as the last prophet and messenger. The ninth is changing, adding or subtracting the main points of worship that have been determined by sharia, and the last is making non-believers non-Muslims without any shar’i reasons.

“These are 10 criteria that we hold to justify that it is a cult group,” said Kyai Ruslan.

The Deputy Chancellor of the Islamic University of Makassar (UIM) admitted that internally, the MUI quite often obtains information from the public regarding the existence of deviant sects, including from former followers, so that the MUI often intervenes to resolve the issue.

Kyai Ruslan gave an example, such as the case of essential schools and the Chapter of Purity. He said, after the MUI intervened to handle it, the movers and followers of this sect realized their mistake, and they asked MUI to guide them.

“All of them have a written statement that they are ready to be fostered,” he said.

Kyai Ruslam also advised the importance of jointly supervising the rise of heretical sects in South Sulawesi, including an educational movement in the form of preaching enlightenment to the public so that residents are not easily influenced.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the United Islamic Community Forum (FUIB) of South Sulawesi, Ustadz Muchtar Daeng Lau, explained that based on data and facts on the ground, it is very easy for heretical groups to spread misguidance among the people.

He said that among them were the deviant Shiite groups, Ahmadiyah and the Fajar Nusantara Movement (Gafatar).

Ustadz Muchtar reminded that the existence of this misguided group is a ticking time bomb that could explode at any time and create big problems if not taken seriously.

“God willing, after this discussion, we will later be in touch with our scholars at the MUI to convey this matter,” he explained.

In line with the Chairman of the Indonesian Muslim Brigade, Muhammad Zulkifli, revealed that the Ahmadiyya deviant sect had planned to carry out activities on January 6-8 2023. like this is because there are certain groups that try to defend their misguidance on the grounds of human rights,” he said.

According to Zulkifli, this human rights argument is one of the main reasons for the frequent stagnation of regulations prohibiting heretical groups.

“In fact, the human rights that they understand are not placed in their place. This is one of the causes for the growth of these heretical ideas,” he said.

Hanif Muslim, an activist who is a member of the Makassar Children’s Communication Forum, who is also in charge of the discussion, is ready to become an enforcer of the MUI fatwa if needed as part of enforcing the amar ma’ruf nahi mungkar. (Aza)
