“The entire extended family of the Ahmadiyya Congregation is deeply saddened by the death of Prof. Dr. Azyumardi Azra on Sunday, September 17, 2022,” said JAI Spokesperson Yendra Budiana, Monday (19/9/2022).
According to him, Azyumardi Azra is considered a very consistent Muslim scholar. Yendra said that Azyumardi had long fought for inclusiveness and equality for all groups, and strongly condemned acts of intolerance in Indonesia.
“One of the consistent attitudes of Prof. Dr. Azyumardi Azra was 17 years ago in 2005 when Ahmadiyah was attacked by intolerant groups. And at that time not many national figures acted. “I immediately asked MUI to review the Ahmadiyah deviant fatwa and strongly condemned the attack on the Ahmadiyah Headquarters in Parung Bogor in July 2005,” Yendra said.
He said that his consistent attitude towards Freedom of Religion and Belief (KBB) and Azyumardi Azra’s closeness to the Ahmadiyya Congregation were felt. Moreover, Azyumardi Azra often defends the Ahmadiyya Community.
“For example, the 2017 meeting at the Baitul Muslimin event. At that time, Prof. Azyumardi Azra asked the Ahmadiyah to write down his views on nationality, especially on Pancasila so that the Indonesian public would understand more about the Ahmadiyah Khilafah system,” Yendra said.
Requesting the SKB of Three Ministers to be Revoked
In addition, according to him, Azyumardi Azra also in 2019, when meeting at an American ambassador event, Azyumardi tried how to revoke the joint decree (SKB) of the three ministers regarding Ahmadiyah.
“Lastly, Prof. Azra in 2020 when the Minister of Religion was just appointed, asked the Minister of Religion and the government to affirm the rights of citizens of the Ahmadiyya and Shia groups who have always been marginalized. They are considered groups whose rights in public services are not accepted by the state. ,” he continued.
According to Yendra, the attitude shown by Azyumardi Azra makes his presence very important for Indonesia in the midst of various ethnicities, religions, cultures, and races.
“These attitudes illustrate that Prof. Azra is a Muslim scholar who is very important for Indonesia. Because he continues to fight for equality, equal rights, inclusiveness in religious, social and state life, especially for Indonesia which is multicultural, respects diversity and diversity,” he concluded. .
