Jakarta. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo expressed his condolences over the 53 fallen sailors who were on the sunken KRI Nanggala-402 submarine.

“In the name of the government and the Indonesian people, I send my deep condolences to the 53 fallen KRI Nanggala-402 crewmembers on their duty in the waters north of Bali,” Jokowi told a broadcasted conference on Monday.

“They are the nation’s best sons, the best patriots guarding the state sovereignty. Their devotion will be engraved in the hearts of all Indonesian people.”

According to Jokowi, all crewmembers will have their ranks promoted to a rank higher than their current one.

“The state will also honor them the Jalasena star, in respect of their dedication and sacrifice,” he said.

Also, the government will pay for the tuition fees of the fallen sailors’ children up to undergraduate education.

At the conference, the president thanked all parties involved in the search operations.

“I also would like to thank friendly countries for their help in the search of KRI Nanggala-402,” Jokowi said.

On Sunday, the military declared that all 53 personnel from the sunken submarine to be dead. The announcement followed after a joint search operation between Singapore and Indonesia had detected the submarine wreckage 838 meters under the sea surface.
