Jordan: Another milestone in relations

Jan 26,2017 – JORDAN TIMES EDITORIAL

His Majesty King Abdullah’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Wednesday was another milestone in relations between the two countries and underpinned the fact that the two leaders have a shared vision on many issues and, most importantly, on regional conflicts, especially in Syria.

The King, in statements to the media before his meeting with Putin, said he was “looking very much forward to improving our bilateral relations” and that discussions would touch on many issues in which Russia plays such a pivotal role, “not only internationally but specifically in our region”.

The King told Putin, that “we have been speaking to many in the world that have not listened to your views and our views, but I am glad that I am here today in Moscow to share not only the friendship but the same vision of bringing stability to our region”.

It is a shame the King’s thoughts and recommendations were not heeded by US president Barack Obama who decided to stay on the sidelines on the conflict in Syria for six long years, during which hundreds of thousands of people were killed, millions were made homeless or refugees and the country was laid waste to.

  1. Things keep-a-changing: In the ‘good old days’ it was difficult to have good relations with Russia and the USA at the same time. Let’s see what the future with Donald Trump will bring.
