A man barreled his car into a crowd at Ohio State Universitybefore exiting the vehicle and stabbing people with a butcher knife in Columbus, Ohio, on Monday morning, authorities said. Details are still emerging, but here’s what we know so far:
What happened?
The suspect, who has been identified as Abdul Razak Ali Artan, drove a car over a curb and into a crowd of people on campus, then got out and attacked students with a butcher knife. Authorities later added that Artan (who was shot and killed by a police officer at the scene) was a student at the school.
“[The] only thing that we can say based on common knowledge is that this was done on purpose,” Ohio State University Police Chief Craig Stone said at a press conference Monday afternoon.
Details of the attack emerged under confusion, after school officials initially reported an “active shooter” on the OSU campus shortly before 10 am. The university’s emergency management team told people to ‘Run Hide Fight’ on Twitter. The attack occurred near an engineering building on campus, according to the Associated Press.
About an hour later, the school said the scene was secured and lifted the order to shelter in place.
Angshuman Kapil, a graduate student, told the AP he was outside the building when the car came over the sidewalk. “It just hit everybody who was in front,” he said. “After that everybody was shouting, ‘Run! Run! Run!’.”
Asked if authorities were considering the possibility that the attack was a terrorist act, Columbus Police Chief Kim Jacobs said, “I think we have to consider that it is.”
How many people were injured?
Eleven people were injured and taken to the hospital, and one was in critical condition, said Stone in the press conference.
The victims were divided among three places for treatment: the OSU Wexner Medical Center, OhioHealth Grant Medical Center and OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital, Stone said.
University officials said at least two victims were being treated for stab wounds, four were hurt by the car and two were being treated for cuts, the AP reported.

The Ohio State University student who carried out a knife attack on campus Monday said in a Facebook post he was “sick and tired” of seeing fellow Muslims “killed and tortured,” according to federal law enforcement officials.
Investigators are examining Abdul Razak Ali Artan’s Facebook page to determine whether the attack was terrorism, though law enforcement officials said it will take time to ascertain motive.
In a Facebook post shortly before the Monday morning rampage, the Somali immigrant urged America “to stop interfering with other countries, especially the Muslim Ummah,” a term for Muslim people at large.
“By Allah, we will not let you sleep unless you give peace to the Muslims. You will not celebrate or enjoy any holiday.”
Artan rammed his car into a group of people on the Columbus campus before exiting the car and charged at others with a knife. Eleven people were hospitalized as a result of the attack.
He is the product of western education which makes a man stupid, selfish and corrupt like Trump.
West must learn to respect and tolerate those who are different. The problem of extremism we are experiencing is not “mass immigration”, immigration has been happening since the dawn of mankind. The problem we are experiencing is a direct result of lack of respect and tolerance substituted by ignorance. The problem we are experiencing is the direct result of poor consciousness and awareness of selective “information” being conveyed to us through various mainstream media sources. There’s a new mainstream anti-Muslim racism that is built on fears for the survival of Western values. That’s the product of a nervous society in which social betterment is becoming increasingly difficult and in which there is a sense of omnipresent competition and struggle. The emotions generated by this are often not directed at a system, but at those who are different, at foreigners. This is also launched from the political arena and absorbed at grassroots level.
Muslim children in state schools with non-Muslim teachers are not in a position to develop positive self-confidence and self-esteem. Muslim children need state funded Muslim schools with Muslim teachers as role models during their developmental periods. There is no place for a non-Muslim child or a teacher in a Muslim school.
