Thousands converge on chip-board factory and residential area owned by Ahmadi Muslims.
We Can’t Even Think Of Desecrating “Holy Quran”
A prominent member of Pakistan’s Ahmadi community, Amer Ahmed Khan, said they could not even think of desecrating the “Holy Quran.”
“The allegations that factory owners and workers desecrated Quranic versus are absolutely false and fabricated. The allegations imperil the lives of thousands of Ahmadis across Pakistan,” Mr Khan told Daily Capital on Saturday.
An enraged mob set Ahmadi’s place of worship on fire accusing community members of desecrating the holy book. The tension started after announcements were made from a couple of local mosques that pages from Holy Quran were being burnt in a factory, owned by an Ahmadi.
Late Friday night, the mobsters set the factory ablaze. There were reports of burning houses, vehicle and other properties of the members of Ahmadi community. A large number of Ahmadis fled from the area, still many locked them inside their houses. A state of peril was looming all over.
Mr Khan said around 200 Ahamadis live in the vicinity of the burnt-down factory. More than 3000 members of this community live in the whole Jhelum district.
He said members of Ahmadi community were brutally tortured by the local people and the police. He accused the local administration and police of watching the looting and burning of their worship place as silent spectators.
He explained a daily paper “Al-Fazl” of Ahmadi community was being disposed of inside the factory. “Under Pakistani law we cannot distribute our literature outside the community. So the leftover copies are properly disposed of.”
He said burning of Holy Scriptures with an intention of disposing was allowed in all religions including Islam.
He argued the Pakistani laws prohibits Ahmadis to print any verse from “Holy Quran” so the question of burning Quranic verses could not arise at the first place.
Mr Khan claimed a large number of Ahmadis were hiding to protect their lives after the Jhelum incident.
