Experts recommend religious way to beat diabetes in the Gulf

“The Holy Quran teaches a lot about food portions and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) teaches one to keep a third of the stomach full with food, a third with drink and a third air.”

It seems the power of religion has no bounds, as healthcare experts in the Gulf are recommending Islamic teachings be used as a tool for combatting diabetes in the region.

According to a new report from The Economist Intelligence Unit released on Wednesday, religious leaders in the UAE can deliver authentic teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a potent public health message to help tackle diabetes in the country.

‘Diabetes in the Gulf: The policy challenge’ addresses the growing challenge of diabetes in the region – with Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) teachings on eating etiquette coming under the spotlight to help bring about change.

A total of 18 experts on diabetes from the region were interviewed for the report, where ‘engage religious leaders’ was highlighted as one of the policy recommendations to tackle the growth of the disease here.
