People of varied beliefs will have the chance to learn about one another during Airdrie’s 6th annual World Religions Conference [WRC].

Put on by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Calgary, the conference will feature speakers representing Islam, Christianity, Judaism and Hinduism who will speak on the topic “freedom of expression and respect for religious sanctities.”

“We are putting in an effort to bring people from different religions together to all speak on a specific topic,” said Sultan Mahmood, one of the event’s organizers.

He added people from all different religions need to be able to understand each other’s backgrounds in order to achieve peace.

“We are a multicultural society. It’s important that we understand one another’s ideologies and that we come to know each other,” said Mahmood.

“The WRC is a way to break the barriers and bridge the gaps [between religions.]”

The speakers will discuss the subject for 20 minutes and then there will be 30 minutes set aside for attendees to ask questions.

He said usually the annual event is well attended, adding that often, there are so many audience questions that there isn’t enough time to answer them all.

“It’s a very popular program,” said Mahmood, who said everyone is welcome to attend.

“People who attend the program really like it.”

The free event will kick off at 6 p.m. on May 7 at the Ramada Inn.
