Zagreb Mayor’s Arrest Holds Important Lessons for Croatia

Source: Balkan Insight.

The Mayor of Zagreb, Milan Bandić, who has run the Croatian capital for over 12 years and who over this period has handled some 20 billion euros of public money, will spend at least a month in investigative custody after his arrested last week.

Bandić is the most powerful Croatian politician to find himself behind bars because – unlike former Prime Minister Ivo Sanader who was arrested months after he resigned – Bandić has ended up in prison while still the incumbent Mayor.

His arrest, no matter how sensationally it echoed in Croatia and in the whole region, was not unexpected, however.

His entire political career, especially since he has been at the helm of Zagreb, has been marked by scandals. More precisely, one could describe a chronology of scandals – one following another as if on a conveyer belt.
