Press Statement by the High Representative
for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC)
and United Nations Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia
on the arson attack on the Al-Taqwa mosque in the West Bank

The High Representative of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations and the United Nations Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia, Mr. Miguel Ángel Moratinos, expresses his deep concern over the arson attack on the Al-Taqwa mosque in the West Bank village of Al-Tuwani. The fire damaged the mosque’s door and windows, and Hebrew graffiti was sprayed on its walls.

The High Representative noted that the Israeli police responded to a report of violence and arson and that the official investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The High Representative recalls his statement dated 19 June 2026 in which he strongly condemns any act of violence or desecration directed against places of worship. He reiterates that places of worship must be protected at all times. Attacks against religious sites risk further heightening tensions and undermining already fragile conditions on the ground.
