Renowned Hollywood actor Giancarlo Esposito, celebrated for his iconic portrayal of Gustavo “Gus” Fring in the critically acclaimed television series Breaking Bad and its prequel Better Call Saul, has officially embraced Islam. The announcement was made by Turki Al-Sheikh, Chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, via a post on X (formerly Twitter).
According to Al-Sheikh, the 68-year-old actor recited the Shahada—the Islamic declaration of faith—while in the Kingdom. A video accompanying the post shows Esposito praying alongside members of a film production team inside a local mosque, capturing a moment of spiritual significance during his stay.
Esposito is currently in Saudi Arabia filming 7 Dogs, a major action movie supported by the Kingdom as part of its ambitious efforts to grow its entertainment industry.
The production reflects Saudi Arabia’s broader strategy to diversify its economy away from oil dependency and establish itself as a global hub for film and culture. In recent years, the country has successfully attracted numerous high-profile international projects, boosting its soft power and creative sectors.
With a career spanning more than four decades, Esposito has built a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most versatile and respected character actors. His breakthrough role as the calculating drug lord Gus Fring earned him widespread acclaim and a devoted fanbase. He has since appeared in major productions including The Mandalorian, The Boys, and Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing, demonstrating remarkable range across film, television, and theatre.
This personal milestone comes as Esposito continues to take on challenging roles while engaging with new cultural experiences abroad.
