JRCPPF Director Atif Mian, the John H. Laporte, Jr. Class of 1967 Professor of Economics, Public Policy and Finance has been awarded the R. K. Cho Economics Prize(Link is external) (Link opens in new window) (조락교경제학상(Link is external) (Link opens in new window)), for his seminal contributions to the study of inequality, monetary policy transmission, and the global implications of debt dynamics. The R.K. Cho award, presented by South Korea’s Yonsei University(Link is external), is one of the most prestigious awards in the field and recognizes researchers who have contributed to the development of both economics scholarship and education.

Mian’s work has shaped contemporary understanding of the financial system’s role in macroeconomic stability and growth, particularly how financial market imperfections and leverage cycles amplify economic downturns. Through both empirical rigor and theoretical insight, his work continues to shape modern macro-financial thinking and inform policy debates worldwide. In 2014, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) selected Mian as one of twenty-five top young economists. He is a recipient of a 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship and was elected Fellow of the Econometric Society in 2021.

The R.K. Cho award was established in 2007 with an endowment from the late Mr. R. K. Cho, the president of Samryoong Co(Link is external) (Link opens in new window). and the chairman of Yongwoon Foundation(Link is external) (Link opens in new window), as well as an alumnus of Yonsei University’s Economics Department(Link is external) (Link opens in new window). Cho was motivated to create the prize after seeing the results of his prior humanities-focused donations to Yonsei University and hoped the prize could help to connect students of his alma mater and famous South Korean economists overseas. Originally awarded only to South Korean citizens, in 2015, the prize was opened to foreign scholars as well.
