The Six Day Creation in the Bible and the Quran Interpreted Metaphorically

Written and collected by Zia H Shah MD, Chief Editor of the Muslim Times

The Quran states that Allah created the heavens and earth in six days. This is mentioned in multiple verses, including:

Allah created the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, in six days. (Al Qur’an 7:54)

He who created the heavens and the earth and all that is between, in six days. (Al Qur’an 25:59)

He it is who created the heavens and the earth in six days. (Al Qur’an 57:4)

Surely your Lord is Allah Who created the heavens and the earth in six days. (Al Qur’an 10:3)

We created the heavens and the earth and all between them in six days. (Al Qur’an 50:38)

The Quran does not mean literal days but six eras. Other verses highlight that time is not absolute, rather relative, a fact that was unknown until Albert Einstein.

The Bible likewise talks about six days of creation. In the Bible, the six-day creation narrative is detailed in the Book of Genesis, chapter 1.

Day 6: Land animals are created, followed by humanity, made in God’s image, entrusted with stewardship over Earth.

Day 1: God creates light, separating it from darkness, naming them Day and Night.

Day 2: The firmament (sky) is established, dividing the waters above from the waters below.

Day 3: Dry land appears as waters are gathered; vegetation, plants, and trees are brought forth.

Day 4: Celestial bodies—the sun, moon, and stars—are created to provide light and mark time.

Day 5: Marine life and birds are created, filling the seas and skies.

Modern theologians, both Muslims and Christians, read these verses metaphorically, not as days but as six eras.

According to the cosmologists the universe’s evolution can be delineated into six distinct eras, each characterized by unique physical processes and transformations. Here’s an overview of these eras:

1. Inflationary Era

This era preceded the hot Big Bang. The universe was filled with energy intrinsic to space itself, causing an exponential expansion. This rapid inflation stretched the universe to a vast size and set the stage for the subsequent development of matter and radiation. Big Think

2. Primordial Era

Following inflation, the universe was a hot, dense plasma of fundamental particles. As it expanded and cooled, these particles combined to form protons, neutrons, and electrons. Nuclear reactions during this time led to the formation of light elements like hydrogen and helium in a process known as Big Bang nucleosynthesis. Beyond Earth

3. Plasma Era

As the universe continued to cool, electrons combined with nuclei to form neutral atoms in an event called recombination. This made the universe transparent to light, allowing photons to travel freely. The afterglow of this era is observed today as the cosmic microwave background radiation. Big Think

4. Dark Ages Era

With the formation of neutral atoms, the universe lacked luminous sources, leading to a period known as the Dark Ages. During this time, matter gradually coalesced under gravity, forming the first stars and galaxies. The light from these first stars ended the Dark Ages and initiated the reionization of the universe. 5. Stellar Era

This era is marked by the birth, evolution, and death of stars. Galaxies formed and merged, and stars synthesized heavier elements through nuclear fusion. Our solar system, including Earth, formed during this period. The universe was dominated by stellar activity, with stars being the primary sources of light and energy. Wikipedia

6. Dark Energy Era

Approximately 6 billion years ago, dark energy became the dominant force driving the universe’s expansion, causing it to accelerate. In this current era, galaxies are moving away from each other at an increasing rate. Over time, this acceleration will lead to a cold, dark, and dilute universe as galaxies recede beyond observable horizons. Big Think

Understanding these eras provides insight into the universe’s past, present, and future, highlighting the dynamic processes that have shaped the cosmos over billions of years.
