Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested a young man in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur in connection with recent attacks on the Ahmadiyya community in Panchagarh.

Abu Taher, son of Sirajul Islam, hailing from Panchagarh, was arrested in the Faridpur area of the upazila early Friday.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Noman Ahmmed of RAB-11 said that based on a tip-off, RAB conducted the drive in the area and arrested Taher in front of a hotel adjoining the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.

The team also seized a foreign pistol, a magazine and four rounds of bullets from his possession.

The RAB official also said that the arrested youth has confessed during primary interrogation that he had involvement in the attacks.

After the incident, he went into hiding.

Abu Taher was turned over to Sreepur police after a case was filed against him under the Arms Act.

Azizur Rahman, inspector (investigation) of Sreepur police station, said that the arrestee was sent to jail following a court order on Friday.

On March 3, two people were killed and at least 50 others were injured in the clash that ensued as the police interrupted a procession of several Islamist groups demanding suspension of an annual event of the Ahmadiyya community and that they are declared non-Muslims officially.
