West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil suggested the Depok City Government to conduct a survey related to religious tolerance .

Ridwan Kamil revealed this after meeting with Depok Mayor Mohammad Idris and religious leaders to discuss differences in perceptions of the results of the religious tolerance survey.

“Earlier, together with Mr. Wali (Idris) and religious leaders, we discussed one of which was the difference in perceptions of the index of religious differences,” said Ridwan Kamil at a press conference at Depok City Hall, Wednesday (28/9/2022).

“My advice, if you want the dynamics to be well established, Depok (conduct) its own survey, later it will be compared with the indicators,” he continued.

The man who is familiarly called Kang Emil said the results of the Depok City Government survey were useful as comparison data for other surveys and for measuring public satisfaction with the Depok City Government.

“If it turns out that (public satisfaction) is still lacking, it will be used as introspection. If it turns out to be even better, it will be used as an argumentation tool,” said Emil. On the other hand, Emil admitted that he often surveyed the public’s satisfaction with his leadership in West Java.

“I did my own survey, but I never released the public’s satisfaction with the West Java Provincial Government. I survey every three months, so it’s just for purposes,” he said.

Previously, Emil did not agree with the results of the Setara Institute survey which stated that Depok City was the most intolerant city. According to Emil, the people of Depok are a kind and tolerant society.

“Maybe the survey method needs to be clarified and I pray that everywhere, especially in West Java, the reality on the ground is that people are very tolerant,” said Emil on April 8, 2022. Emil said that the conclusion drawn by the Setara Institute which stated that Depok was the most intolerant city was a premature conclusion.

“I hope that all residents (of West Java) can respect and respect each other. Don’t because of diversity and differences, we are divided,” said Emil. The Setara Institute released the Tolerant City Index (IKT) 2021 by assessing the tolerance level of several cities in Indonesia. In his study, the Setara Institute used four variables and eight indicators to assess the tolerance level of 94 cities in Indonesia.

The four variables are: City government regulations: Development plans in the form of RPJMD and other supporting legal products, and discriminatory policies. Government actions: Statements of key officials about incidents of intolerance and concrete actions related to events. Social regulation: Incidents of intolerance and the dynamics of civil society related to incidents of intolerance. Religious demographics:

The religious heterogeneity of the population and socio-religious inclusion.

Depok City was the least tolerant city with the lowest score, which was 3,577.

The executive director of the Setara Institute, Ismail Hasani, stated that there are at least two reasons why Depok is called the most intolerant city.

“I have to admit, the main problems in Depok are two things that are actually of high weight. First, there is a discriminatory legal product, which is existing and effectively implemented by the government,” said Ismail on March 30, 2022. This legal product has a weighted value of 10 percent of the eight indicators of the tolerant city index version of the Setara Institute. In addition to legal products, the political leadership in Depok is considered not to promote tolerance.

In fact, discriminatory policies and incidents of intolerance both have a 20 percent weight in the assessment. “So you can imagine, on the basis of the mayor’s order, there was no wind and no rain, suddenly a mosque was sealed,” said Ismail. “This is a problem

So, not only at the regulatory level, which weighs 20 percent, but also the intolerant political actions of mayors,” he added. The sealing was accompanied by intimidation, threats, and hate speech from a group of people who came with the Depok City Satpol PP. “The opposite of a tolerant leader is an intolerant leader, and that happened in Depok. We can see how the Depok regional head is not open to pluralism,” said Ismail. Ismail added that of the four existing variables, elements of civil society in Depok scored quite well, but not enough to make up for the bad score in terms of local legal products and political leadership.

As a result, Depok is considered to be very dominated by one religion in various public spaces, including the property sector. “If you go to Depok, how in the past 20 years has Depok experienced a serious uniformity process in the name of religion and morality,” said Ismail.
