A Toronto-based Muslim group is urging its members to remain vigilant and “take all precautions necessary” after four pedestrians were killed in a hit-and-run incident police are treating as an anti-Islamic hate crime.

The driver of a truck struck five people, killing four and injuring another seriously, in London, Ont., on Sunday.

London police, who say they believe it was an intentional act and that the victims were targeted because of their Islamic faith, are consulting with the RCMP about potential terrorism charges.

Nathaniel Veltman, 20, has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one charge of attempted murder.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama`at Canada said in a statement that it is “shocked and distraught” to learn of the attack in London.

“We are utterly devastated and heartbroken to learn of this hate-motivated and senseless attack on an innocent family,” said the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama`at Canada’s national president, Lal Khan Malik. “There must be no place for hate and intolerance in Canada and our deepest thoughts and prayers are for the victims and their family.”
