A 40-year-old man named I Made Budi Suwantara from Marga, Tabanan has decided to end his life after allegedly being depressed due to his financial situation.
Suwantara was found dead by relatives at his house on Monday (19/4) after allegedly being depressed due to financial problems that he has been facing since the Covid-19 pandemic struck the island and caused him to lose his job. Apart from his financial situation, Suwantara’s wife also left him in January 2021.
His relatives immediately reported the incident to the Marga Police Department when they found him lifeless. According to data from the Head of Tabanan Police Department, they’ve already recorded 4 suicides in April 2021 alone. One of the Mental Health Doctors from the Tabanan Hospital, Dr. I Gusti Ngurah Bagus Mahayasa said that the number of suicide cases has increased since the Covid-19 pandemic struck in 2020. “There are many factors that could cause someone to commit suicide such as depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, and apparently depression is the major cause for people in Bali these days.” Mahayasa said. He also explained that most of his patients that came to him for therapy are people who have been getting depressed due to their physical illness, financial situations and family issues. “It is very important for people to manage their stress by finding some activities such as gardening, traveling or visiting a doctor.” Dr. Mahayasa concluded. He also realized that many people in Bali are getting anxious these days, especially those who have been reliant on the tourism industry to provide for their family. Mahayasa reminds the people to be more open to communicate their problems so they could potentially receive some type of support to release their stress.
