Wearing a hijab is the most liberating thing I’ve ever experienced

Last month for Ramadan I wanted to try a little bit harder than I’ve tried in previous years. I decided this year I was going to, amongst other plans, wear a hijab.

Ramadan is a very holy month in the Islamic calendar, we up the ante, we fast, we pray, everything that month is about spiritual awareness and strengthening our faith.

I’ve never worn a hijab in public. For me it used to feel like something only seasoned pros could do. I was (and still am) a novice.

After chatting with some Muslim friends, they said something that changed the way I thought. It’s the intention that matters. Things like this aren’t binary.

It’s important to just start, start somewhere you feel comfortable. So I did. But instead, I started somewhere I didn’t feel comfortable. I started with the hijab.
