AFP- LONDON: Anjem Choudary, one of Britain’s most high-profile Muslim preachers, and known globally for praising the men responsible for the September 11 attacks on the United States, and the July 7 2005 London bombings was charged on Wednesday with inviting support for Islamic State (IS).

Choudary, 48, was accused of using lectures, which were published online, for encouraging support for the banned organisation, which has seized swathes of territory in Syria and Iraq.

“Following an investigation by the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command, we have today authorised charges against Anjem Choudary and Mohammed Mizanur Rahman,” said Sue Hemming, Head of Special Crime and Counter Terrorism at the Crown Prosecution Service.

“It is alleged that Anjem Choudary and Mohammed Rahman invited support for (IS) in individual lectures which were subsequently published online.”

While he was born in the UK, Chaudhry is of Pakistani descent.

“Between June 29 2014, and March 6, 2015, invited support for a proscribed terrorist organisation, namely ISIL, also known as ISIS or the Islamic State, contrary to section 12 Terrorism Act 2000,” his charges read.

Both men were arrested on September 25 last year on suspicion of being members of a proscribed organisation and released on police bail.

They were detained again pending a formal charging hearing at Westminster Magistrates Court in London later on Wednesday.

  1. The Muslim Times’ Editorial team is supportive of this charge as we believe that patriotism is part of the Muslim faith and ISIS is a terrorist organization. We would also like to use this as an example to the free speech absolutists that there are after all limits to free speech.

If the 2-3 million Muslims have to live in peace and prosperity in UK, they need to stand for the country rather than the Muslim extremists.

The Holy Prophet Muhammad, may peace be on him, struck peace with the Meccans on their terms in Hudaibiyya and this led to his eventual victory. The Muslims need to completely stop being belligerent and strike perfect peace with their non-Muslim neighbors, where ever they live and within a century or so, they will find that every country in the world, will be a Muslim majority country.

As regards the free speech I would like to defer to the European Convention of Human Rights.

    European Convention of Human Rights
I think many of the exceptions for freedom of speech are tackled in the Article 10 of European Convention of Human Rights.
This Article provides the right to freedom of expression, subject to certain restrictions that are “in accordance with law” and “necessary in a democratic society”. This right includes the freedom to hold opinions, and to receive and impart information and ideas, but allows restrictions for:

    interests of national security
    territorial integrity or public safety
    prevention of disorder or crime
    protection of health or morals
protection of the reputation or the rights of others
preventing the disclosure of information received in confidence
maintaining the authority and impartiality of the judiciary

We would certainly need the best legal minds humanity can offer to give concrete and legalistic details of the above exceptions that may be acceptable to people of all faiths, ethnicities and nationalities.

If the Supreme Court Justices do not come to our rescue, may be a good and an accomplished writer can help out with a best selling book. But, the key is to at least, win the moderates, in all the established religions of the world and among the agnostics and atheists.
