A conference entitled “A Path to Peace: Just Relations between Nations”, organised by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Spain, was recently held in Madrid.

This conference focused on one of the greatest challenges facing humanity today: the achievement of lasting and universal peace. From the outset, the speaker established a fundamental idea that ran through the entire presentation: peace and justice are inseparable. One cannot exist without the other, and any attempt to build peace whilst ignoring justice is doomed to failure.

Firstly, the current global context was described as deeply worrying. Despite technological advances and material progress, the world is mired in growing disorder, both internally within countries and in international relations. Political tensions, armed conflicts, economic inequalities and mistrust between nations demonstrate that peace is far from being achieved. This picture contradicts the official statements of many governments, which claim to work for peace whilst, in practice, acting in their own interests.

The presentation highlighted that this contradiction stems from a lack of real justice. Although laws are enacted and treaties signed, these are not respected when they conflict with the interests of the most powerful. The growing disregard for international law by certain powers was cited as an example, which weakens the global system and creates instability. When rules are not applied fairly, trust disappears and conflict becomes inevitable.

Historical attempts to establish world peace were then analysed. Following the First World War, the League of Nations was created with the intention of preventing further conflicts. However, its structural shortcomings, particularly the lack of fairness and commitment on the part of the major powers, led to its failure and indirectly contributed to the outbreak of the Second World War. Subsequently, the United Nations emerged with a similar purpose, but it too has shown significant limitations. Internal inequalities, such as the existence of permanent members with veto power, have generated frustration and impeded the fair application of rules.

From an Islamic perspective, the conference proposed an alternative approach based on divine principles. It is asserted that human knowledge is limited and can be influenced by interests, prejudices and errors of judgement. In contrast, divine law is perfect and free from personal interests. Therefore, Islam offers a solid ethical framework for establishing justice and, consequently, peace.

One of the fundamental principles of Islam is the absolute equality of all human beings. The Holy Quran teaches that differences in nationality, race or culture do not imply any superiority. This principle is reinforced by the teachings of the Prophet of Islam, who declared that no group is superior to another. The application of this principle in international relations would eliminate many of the current tensions based on discrimination and domination.

Another essential aspect is impartiality in justice. Islam demands that the truth be upheld even when it goes against one’s own interests. This implies that nations must act with honesty and fairness, without favouring themselves to the detriment of others. However, the current reality shows that many political and judicial decisions are influenced by economic power and external pressures.

The conference also addressed the role of legal and judicial systems. It was noted that, in many cases, justice does not prevail because the most powerful can influence the outcomes. This undermines trust in institutions and contributes to the perpetuation of injustice. Furthermore, cases were cited in which judges and lawyers have faced reprisals for attempting to act with integrity, highlighting the gravity of the problem.

In the economic sphere, criticism was levelled at the exploitation of developing countries by wealthier nations. Under the pretext of aid or cooperation, agreements are established that primarily benefit developed countries, leaving the poorest in a state of dependency. This dynamic generates frustration, inequality and, in many cases, internal conflicts that can lead to violence and extremism.

Islam proposes a different model based on sincere and selfless cooperation. Nations must help one another without seeking hidden benefits or imposing unfair conditions. This aid must focus on the genuine development of peoples, respecting their dignity and promoting self-sufficiency.

Another key point discussed was the condemnation of greed and envy. The conference noted that many conflicts arise from the desire to control other countries’ resources.

Islam teaches that every nation must respect the resources of others and avoid any form of unjust appropriation. This principle is fundamental to preventing conflicts and fostering peaceful relations.

Regarding conflict resolution, it was stated that nations have a responsibility to act as impartial mediators. When a dispute arises, they must strive to reconcile the parties fairly. If one of the parties breaches the agreements, the international community must intervene to restore justice, but always within the bounds of fairness and avoiding revenge.

The conference also warned of current dangers. Rising international tensions, the formation of political blocs and the arms race point towards an uncertain future. The possibility of a world war with devastating consequences was mentioned, particularly due to the destructive power of modern weapons.

Faced with this situation, the message was clear: humanity must change course. It is necessary to abandon selfish interests and adopt principles of true justice. This requires a profound shift in the mindset of leaders and societies, as well as a sincere commitment to fairness and mutual respect.

Finally, the conference concluded with a call for reflection and action. Participants were urged to recognise the current dangers and to work collectively towards a fairer world. Only by applying principles of absolute justice will it be possible to establish lasting peace and ensure a secure future for generations to come.

In summary, the central message is that peace is not simply the absence of war, but the result of an order based on justice, equality and sincere cooperation between nations. This ideal, though demanding, is presented as the only viable path to achieving global stability.
