Israeli troops have seized 200 million shekels — worth $54.29 million — from the Bank of Palestine headquarters in Gaza, as reported by Israeli newspaper Maariv on February 11.

Military forces took the funds allocated for the Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority after coming under fire in the Al-Rimal neighbourhood last week, the newspaper reported, citing Israeli officials.

“Israeli soldiers were at the Bank of Palestine headquarters in Gaza last week to prevent money from reaching Hamas,” an Israel military spokesman told Maariv, without providing further details.

He said seizing the funds “was decided at the political level.”

Despite the International Court of Justice’s ruling ordering Tel Aviv to prevent acts of genocide against Palestinians, Israel continues its brutal offensive in Gaza, where it has killed at least 28,200 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured 67,800 others since October 7, according to Palestinian health authorities.

The Israeli offensive has damaged or destroyed 60 percent of Gaza’s infrastructure and has left 85 percent of the enclave’s population internally displaced amid acute shortages of food, clean water and medicine, according to the UN.
