Pope Francis stresses value of interreligious talks with Islam

Vatican City, May 4 (Prensa Latina) At a meeting with Jordanian Prince El Hassan bin Talal on Thursday, Pope Francis stressed the importance of talks between Christianity and Islam, emphasizing ‘what unites us, both on the religious-spiritual and ethical-moral levels.’

The Supreme Pontiff met with the participants in the 6th Colloquium between the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue of the Holy See and the Royal Institute for Interreligious Studies, directed by the Prince, whom he thanked for their perseverance.

The Bishop of Rome pointed out that for this meeting between the two religions, whose main topic is ‘Creative concordances between Christianity and Islam,’ to be fruitful, it requires a style of sincerity and mutual respect, with awareness of both convergences and divergences, focusing especially on the former.

He referred among the points of convergence to ‘attention to the disadvantaged and to those who suffer: orphans, widows, the sick, the elderly, immigrants, refugees.’The Pope noted that this colloquium ‘confirms that feeling of fraternity which is the foundation of relations between peoples,’ because ‘it is a matter of preserving each piece of this beautiful mosaic zealously.’

He highlighted the transcendence of these efforts, particularly at present, ‘marked by conflicts and violence.’
