The Ahmadiyya community in East Lombok was attacked by mobs, on Saturday afternoon and night (19/5/2018) and Sunday morning (20/5/2018). The three attacks resulted in eight houses damaged, four motorcycles destroyed, and as many as 24 people had to be evacuated to the East Lombok Police Office.

This is based on an official statement received by Tirto from the Spokesperson of the Ahmadiyya Community Indonesia (JAI), Yendra Budiana, Sunday (20/5/2018).

In the midst of the solemn atmosphere of Ramadan fasting which should be peaceful, and maintain anger and hatred for others, he said, a group of mobs actually tarnished the sanctity of Ramadan by attacking, vandalizing, and expelling fellow citizens.

“This period of rage has actually been indicated starting in March 2018 and confirmed by the incident on May 09, 2018 in a different village, but still in East Lombok Regency,” said Yendra.

Responding to this, East Lombok Regency Police Chief, AKBP Eka Fathur Rahman, stated that his party had been trying to prevent it since the destruction and attack on May 9. However, according to him, the effort has not yet been completed and there have been successive attacks from Saturday to Sunday.

“We are still in a meeting with the local government for this attack. This, right, Ahmadiyya is not entirely the authority of the police. This is a local government and stakeholders to protect minorities,” Eka told Tirto.

Unfortunately, when asked about the chronology of events, including the second and third attacks that occurred in front of security forces, Eka did not want to answer. He said he would send a chronology after the meeting with the local government and other stakeholders was completed.

“Later, bro. We send you a complete press release. The important thing is that we focus on maintaining community safety so that there are no victims and rehabilitation efforts in the future, the matter of recent destruction, “said Eka.

When Jokowi’s Government Allowed the Suppression of Ahmadiyah Abdus Salam, Ahmadiyya scholar ignored by Muslim countries NTB Provincial Government’s Response NTB Governor TGB Zainul Majdi stated that his party would thoroughly investigate the attacks and destruction that befell the Ahmadiyah community in East Lombok. Because, according to him, this not only undermines the peace that the government has been trying to realize, but also violates the law.

“They, right, have actually been living peacefully, and then how come they were suddenly provoked like that, right, there must be a trigger. If you look at the temporary trigger, it is still very trivial. I still have doubts. That’s why I asked to be checked by Bina Daerah here and friends of the police,” TGB told Tirto on Sunday.

Until now, TGB claimed that it had only received reports of the incident due to ridicule between Ahmadiyya community children and local residents due to differences in understanding. On the contrary, he has not received a report regarding police negligence and other factors that caused this incident. “I will try to check later. Because I can’t get such a report [police negligence]. So I dive in. The point is that from the Provincial Government and the Acting Regent of East Lombok, I have a special task to first save lives, rehabilitate facilities, and third mediate,” TGB said.
