10 cases filed over Ahmadiyya attack, 130 arrested

Though the situation around ‘Salana Jalsa’ of the Ahmadiyya community in Panchagarh has become normal, there is a fear of arrests throughout the district. The number of arrests is also increasing over the time. Along with police, RAB and BGB are conducting arrest operations.

According to police, 10 separate cases have already been registered in connection with police-devotee clashes and rumors spreading arson and vandalism. So far 130 people have been arrested in these cases. There are thousands of unknown accused in these cases filed with different police stations of Panchagarh.

Earlier, last Friday (March 3), Panchagarh was tensed with ‘Salna Jalsa’ of Ahmadiyya Community. After the Friday prayers, protest processions were brought out from various mosques in the district town to stop Ahmadiyya’s a three-day Jalsa, demanding to brand them ‘non-Muslim declaration’. Called by Sammilito Khatme Nabuwat Protection Parishad, the protest march started from in front of the central mosque of the district towards Chowrangi intersection on a large scale. When police stopped them, the clash ensued. The devotees attacked police and started throwing brickbats. At this time, the police also responded. In the meantime, the protesters vandalized and set fire to different areas of the district city. They vandalized police and BGB vehicles and also set fire to the traffic police office.

Apart from this, a section of protestors took out the goods of four Ahmadiyya shops in Panchagarh market and set them on fire. Several houses were also set on fire at that time.

One of the Ahmaddiyya community and another of the devotees were killed in the incident. Later, the situation returned to normal when Jalsa was suspended around 9:00 pm.

Superintendent of Police S M Sirajul Huda said, 10 cases have been filed over the Jalsa of Ahmadiyya community. A total of 130 people were arrested till Tuesday. Maximum precautions are being taken in arresting the accused.

He said those are involved being arrested by checking video footage, intelligence information, various still images.

    Shocked to hear of the violent attacks against the Ahmadiyya Community’s annual convention in Panchagarh, Bangladesh. The UK Government are in touch with the Bangladeshi authorities to ensure the community’s safety and that perpetrators are brought to account.
