Ahmadi homeopathic doctor Rasheed Ahmed, 75, was shot dead in Gutriala district of Gujarat district.

According to initial reports, Dr Rasheed was shot dead at around 5 pm on Sunday while he was examining patients at his clinic. The body of Hafiz Inam, the alleged murderer of Dr. Rashid Ahmed, also in the fields some distance from the scene of the crime, committed suicide mysteriously after killing Dr. Rashid Ahmed.

About Hafiz Inam, it is said that he is hostile to Ahmadis. There are reports that the local police have arrested the killer’s assistant.

It is also reported that the body of the alleged murderer Dr. Rashid Ahmed, Hafiz Inam, found in the fields some distance from the crime scene.

Dr. Rashid Ahmed Sahib was a noble citizen and had no animosity towards anyone. He was a holder of Norwegian nationality. His family lives abroad. The deceased doctor had opened a free homeo pharmacy in his house to serve the people of the area.

To protect the lives of innocent Ahmadis, the ongoing hate campaign against Ahmadis needs to be stopped immediately and those responsible brought to justice.

A fact-finding mission report has been released by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) recently. A fact-finding mission led by the HRCP has identified an alarming rise in cases of persecution among members of the Ahmadiyya community in Gujranwala and surrounding areas. In particular, FIRs have been registered on several occasions against members of the community for desecrating their graves, destroying minarets of Ahmadiyya places of worship, performing animal sacrifices on the occasion of Eid.

According to the mission report, there was evidence that the civil administration in Gujranwala and Wazirabad was directly involved in the destruction of minarets in Ahmadiyya places of worship in December 2022 and January 2023, following objections from members of a local political-religious organization. Although the administration claims it did so to prevent the threat of violence, the way the matter was handled has fueled growing hostility towards the Ahmadiyya community and increased the threat to Ahmadis in the area.

What is of particular concern is that the Regional Ministry believes that certain statutory and constitutional provisions provide scope for such persecution, but not under Article 20(b) of the Constitution. The report added that ‘while the mission understands that the local bureaucracy, the police and the judiciary have been successfully intimidated by a religious group, their response was to maintain law and order while respecting the fundamental rights of the Ahmadiyya community. It shows a serious failure.’

The mission has recommended full implementation of the 2014 and 2021 judgments by Supreme Court Justices Tasadeq Hussain Jilani and Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, including the formation of a special police force to protect places of worship of religious minorities. Furthermore, the capacity of the police should be improved through adequate infrastructure and training to deal with the threat of public violence in such situations.
