Nehru’s mother …

Did I tell you this one before?

Once upon a time Jawaharlal Nehru was invited by his University in Oxford to deliver a speech. During his speech he said:

” And … some of the best times of my life I spent in the arms of a women who was not my wife ! “

The audience, even in Oxford, was shocked. They did not expect this from an Indian Gentleman. Anyway, that may be the case, but not something to talk about in public. (in those days).

But then Nehru continued and said:

” And that was in the arms of my mother “

The audience burst out laughing and after a moment of tension now relaxed and clapped.

Swaran Singh, Nehru’s Foreign Minister, was in the audience. He watched everyone clapping and thought ‘ I must use this sentence sometime and get all the applause too.

Several weeks later Swaran Singh was invited to speech in his University in New Dehli.  So, during his speech he also used this sentence and said:

” And, some of the best times of my life I spent in the arms of a women, who was not my wife!”

Of course the audience in New Dehli was even more shocked than the audience in Oxford.  Swaran Singh enjoyed the moment and waited a bit and then said:

” And, that was in the arms of Nehru”s mother “

(Swaran Singh could not understand why no one was clapping …)
