The UK government has signed deals for 90 million doses of promising coronavirus vaccines that are being developed.

The vaccines are being researched by an alliance between the pharmaceutical companies BioNtech and Pfizer as well as the firm Valneva.

The new deal is on top of 100 million doses of the Oxford University vaccine being developed by AstraZeneca.

However, it is still uncertain which of the experimental vaccines may work.

A vaccine is widely seen as the best chance of getting our lives back to normal.

Research is taking place at an unprecedented scale – the world became aware of coronavirus at the beginning of the year, but already more than 20 vaccines are in clinical trials.

Some can provoke an immune response, but none has yet been proven to protect against infection.

The best of the Muslim Times’ collection for war against Covid 19:

In this day and age, understanding bacteria and viruses and developing vaccines are national security issues. In my view sizable part of every country’s defense budget should be spent in these pursuits rather than making tanks and other weapons.

  1. The U.K. Government said on Monday that it has secured early access to 90 million vaccine doses of two possible COVID-19 vaccines being developed by a partnership between Germany’s BioNTech and U.S. drugmaker Pfizer, as well as one by French group Valneva.

The business ministry said it had signed an agreement with the BioNTech/Pfizer alliance PFE, +1.82% for 30 million doses. Delivery of an initial 10 million doses is expected to start by the fourth quarter 2020, subject to clinical success and regulatory approval, with a further 20 million doses to be delivered in 2021.

Listed on Nasdaq, BioNTech BNTX, +12.36% is one of 17 firms worldwide that has started human trials on a vaccine against COVID-19. It uses synthetic messenger RNA (mRNA) technology to develop a vaccine, a process that is faster than traditional methods.

  2. ome drug companies say we’ll have a coronavirus vaccine by the winter. Others say that’s an irresponsible prediction. Some promise to forgo profits on a vaccine, but others believe they’re entitled to their monetary due.

Now, lawmakers can force the industry to get its story straight. On Tuesday, executives from five drug companies leading the vaccine race are due at a congressional hearing to talk about their progress in developing a product the entire world desperately needs. Representatives from AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, Merck, Moderna, and Pfizer will appear in front of the House Energy and Commerce Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee.

People weary of the constraints Covid-19 is placing on lives are pinning a lot of hopes on the promises those companies have made, particularly when it comes to when a vaccine might be ready. But there are still looming questions, from who will get a successful vaccine first to how much it might cost.

    • yea – personally I am not fond of all these predictions, and not only relating to covid-19. For instance during elections the media is talking about what may be, why not just wait a little and see the actual results.
