The National Basketball Association is engaged in “exploratory conversations” with its media partner Walt Disney about resuming its season suspend by Covid-19, the league said on Saturday.

In a statement released on the league’s Twitter account, the NBA says it wants to start the season in late July at Disney’s ESPN complex in Orlando as a “single site for an NBA campus for games, practices, and housing,” the statement said.

Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Marc Lasry told CNBC the NBA has a board of governors call next Friday where discussions about restarting will continue. The billionaire co-founder of Avenue Capital also suggested the league should be playing by July.

“I think we’ll have something, hopefully within the next 6 to 8 weeks, we should be playing,” said Lasry, who appeared on CNBC’s “Halftime Report” on Friday.

Collaborating with Disney is beneficial for both parties, as ESPN would capitalize on potential content opportunities. Disney, along with Turner Sports,  pays the NBA roughly $2.6 billion per year for national media rights.

Before resuming, the NBA would need a large quantity of Covid-19 testing kits for daily use. The league said it would work with health officials on a “comprehensive set of guidelines to ensure that appropriate medical protocols and protections are in place.”

Asked when he would feel comfortable returning, Houston Rockets star James Harden told CNBC when the pandemic has “calmed down all the way to a minimum.”

“I want it to be safe,” said Harden. “I want it to be entertaining for the fans and players to get out there and compete. As soon as we can get this ramped up, I’m ready to go. I feel like the majority of the players feel the same way.”

In this day and age, understanding bacteria and viruses and developing vaccines are national security issues. In my view sizable part of every country’s defense budget should be spent in these pursuits rather than making tanks and other weapons.

  1. New York (CNN Business)Americans took a small and cautious step to return to the skies this weekend, the start of the traditional summer travel season.

The TSA reported Saturday that it screened more passengers at US airports on Thursday and Friday than at any time in the last two months. It’s only a modest improvement, but crucial for the turnaround chances for the battered US travel industry.

The number of travelers passing through airport screening hit 318,449 Thursday and 348,673 Friday, compared to more than 2.6 million passengers on each of the same days a year ago.

It was first time since March 23 that the TSA screened more than 300,000 people, and the first time since March 25 that the percentage of those screenings exceeded 10% of year-earlier figures. The lowest point occurred April 14 when fewer than 88,000 passing through screening, only 4% of the year-earlier level.

  2. While other American team sports leagues have pledged to return to the field soon from shutdowns or delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, the nation’s top women’s soccer league has named a date: June 27.

The National Women’s Soccer League, which includes all 23 members of the 2019 World Cup-winning U.S. women’s soccer team, will play a one-month tournament to be held entirely in Utah. But it isn’t yet clear how many of the league’s stars will participate, given ongoing concerns about the virus.

In the tournament, dubbed the NWSL Challenge Cup, each of the league’s nine teams will play four games in a preliminary round. The top eight teams will advance to the quarterfinals, then the tournament moves to a knockout stage. The semifinals and July 26 final will be played at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. No fans will be allowed at games.

Who will take the field has yet to be revealed. The U.S. Soccer Federation, which pays the NWSL salaries for U.S. women’s national team players, said it supports the league’s decision to resume play.

Becca Roux, executive director of the U.S. women’s team’s players association, said in a statement that the association’s top priority is players’ physical and mental health and safety. She added that the players association and the federation have agreed that members of the women’s national team may each choose whether to participate in the NWSL tournament.

Both the U.S. women’s national team players and the rest of the NWSL players will continue to be paid whether they participate in the tournament or not, spokespeople for the USSF and the NWSL players’ union said. The league also has agreed to cover any health-related costs that arise due to participation in the tournament, according to Yael Averbuch, executive director of the NWSL players’ union.

How many star players take the field could determine the success of the NWSL’s earlier return than other leagues, when it won’t have to share as much of the spotlight. The tournament’s opener and final will be broadcast on CBS. A spokeswoman for league sponsor Procter & Gamble said in a statement the brand was happy to “bring greater visibility to these elite players and teams.”

  3. The latest decisions include allowing horse racing to take place without spectators from Monday. Sports like soccer, rugby, cricket, golf and snooker will follow, also without fans in attendance.

“The British sports recovery has begun,” Dowden said.

The government had previously announced it would push for some schools to open from June 1 and allow some non-essential businesses to open from June 15.

“The consensus of scientific advice is that the measures announced for Monday with contact tracing in place should keep” the infection rate below the key level of 1, Van-Tam said.
