On this #WorldTeachersDay I will like to bring to you a poignant touché story.
Dr. Abdus Salam visited India in December 1979, soon after attending the Nobel award ceremony in Sweden. He had requested then Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, to help him trace his Professor Anilendra Ganguly who had migrated after partition from Lahore.
Dr. Salam was from Mohalla Chain Pura, Jhang and the Government High School Jhang was only a middle school in 1934 when Dr. Salam, took admission there in grade four. He studied there from April 3, 1934 to March 31, 1938.
His mathematics teacher was Professor Anilendra Ganguly. He taught Salam mathematics at Sanatan Dharma College, Lahore. Salam visited Calcutta to pay his respects to octogenarian ailing professor Ganguly at latter’s residence, in Calcutta on January 19, 1981.
After the partition he has migrated to India, 50 years after he had taught Dr. Salam, he visited him two years after he was awarded the Nobel prize. He was conscious that his love for mathematics was inculcated by Professor Ganguly at Sanatan Dharma College, Lahore.
The teacher was feeble and unable to sit up and greet him when Dr. Salam visited him in his house. Dr. Salam took his Nobel medal and said that ‘Mr. Anilendra Ganguly this medal is a result of your teaching and love of mathematics that you instilled in me,’ and he put the medal around his teachers neck.

I am disappointed to read that you have chosen to cast this fine gesture between a student and a teacher in religious terms. I am sure that neighter Dr Ganguly saw his student as a Muslim, nor would Dr Salam have seen his teacher as a Hindu. If any charge of mixing religion at all has to be made, it should be at the Pakistan government, which has declared Ahmediyas to be Non Muslim. Dr Salam was an Ahmediya. So from his grave stone in Lahore that had initially read “First Muslim Nobel Laureate”, the Pakistani Government removed “Muslim” and left the incorrect discription “First Nobel Laureate”.
Pakistanis do not deserve people like Abdul salam and Pervez hoodboy.
